Conte Memorial Highway, as running from Amityville north through Huntington to Halesite, passing through Melville along the way.[9] The Long Island Expressway (I-495) forms Melville's southern edge, and the Northern State Parkway — like the state's other limited-access parkways, maintained by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation rather than the Department of Transportation, under Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Law Section 13.03 — passes through the hamlet as well.[9] Before either of the state's controlled-access roads existed, William K. Vanderbilt Jr.'s privately built Long Island Motor Parkway opened in 1908 and ran through the Town of Huntington's then-rural interior near Melville and Dix Hills before its 1938 closure.[7]"

In a footnote to Huntington Branch, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People v. Town of Huntington, 844 F.2d 926 (2d Cir. 1988), the court noted that the Town, in its brief, had asked the court to take judicial notice of \"a new proposal, approved by the Town Board in December, 1987, to build 50 units of subsidized housing in the Melville section\" as evidence the Town was acting in good faith; the panel declined to consider the proposal, calling it \"entirely speculative\" and finding it did not address the appellants' central objection to the Town's zoning code.[4] The broader case, over the Town's confinement of multifamily housing to an urban-renewal zone centered on Huntington Station, is described in full in the Town of Huntington's own file; the Supreme Court affirmed the Second Circuit's ruling per curiam in Town of Huntington v. Huntington Branch, NAACP, 488 U.S. 15 (1988).[4][5]"
