"Stony Brook is an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Brookhaven.[2] The William Sidney Mount House, associated with the Long Island genre painter born in 1807, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966, one of the earliest listings anywhere under the newly established federal program.[12]",
"The hamlet's modern commercial center dates to philanthropist Ward Melville's Stony Brook Village Center. Starting in 1939, Melville renovated the Old Hallock Homestead he had inherited and set about building, entirely at his own expense — about $500,000, or more than $8 million today by the Village Center's own accounting — a colonial-style commercial village around the harbor; construction was completed in the summer of 1941, and the Village Center describes itself as long recognized as the first planned shopping center in the country.[4] Melville later donated the land on which the State University of New York built its Stony Brook campus: the university had been established in 1957 to train secondary-school teachers of mathematics and science, operating first from a former Gold Coast estate in Oyster Bay, before a new campus was built near the village of Stony Brook in 1962 on Melville's donated land.[3]",
"West Meadow Beach, a Town of Brookhaven peninsula park on Stony Brook Harbor, was for decades the site of privately built summer cottages leased from the Town. In 1996 the state legislature passed companion bills (Assembly bill A.11008-A and Senate bill S.7829, the latter sponsored by then-State Senator James Lack) requiring the roughly 100 remaining cottage occupants to pay annual rent into a capital restoration fund; the money was used in 2004 to remove the cottages and restore the beach as public parkland, with the Gamecock Cottage, one cottage kept as a local museum, and two cottages used for security and park-protection purposes left standing.[18] The removed cottage district had briefly been added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 2004, and the Gamecock Cottage remains separately listed, added August 30, 2007.[8][17]",
"Several other Stony Brook buildings are individually listed on the National Register: the Hawkins Homestead at 165 Christian Avenue (1988), the Nathaniel Longbotham House at 1541 Stony Brook Road (1989), the Stony Brook Grist Mill on Harbor Road (1990), and St. James Chapel on Main Street (2000).[13][14][15][16]"

"The Town of Brookhaven has no police department of its own; the Suffolk County Police Department's 6th Precinct, headquartered at 400 Middle Country Road in Selden, covers the hamlets and incorporated villages of the northern Town of Brookhaven, including Stony Brook.[6] The State University of New York at Stony Brook separately maintains its own Stony Brook University Police Department for the campus, with a stated mission to \"foster a safe environment for our campus community through proactive, progressive, and professional law enforcement services.\"[11]"
