What Happened
A 19-year-old University at Albany student was killed Sunday evening when his motorcycle struck a guide rail on the northbound Wantagh State Parkway just south of Goose Neck Bridge in Nassau County, according to CBS 6 Albany, citing New York State Police.
The operator was traveling northbound on the parkway when the motorcycle hit the guide rail. The impact ejected both the operator and a passenger. The operator landed on the roadway; the passenger landed off the roadway in a grassy area, New York State Police told CBS 6 Albany.
Both were transported to a nearby hospital. The operator was pronounced dead there. His passenger remained in critical condition as of Tuesday, August 25, 2026. State Police confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
On Tuesday, a UAlbany spokesperson issued a written statement: “Our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends. We encourage the UAlbany community to use our mental health resources, including Counseling & Psychological Services, TimelyCare, or Middle Earth if they need support.” The statement was the university’s first public response to the fatality, published the day after the crash.
A GoFundMe was set up following the student’s death to help his family with financial costs, per the CBS 6 Albany report.
Location & Road Context
The crash site is on the Wantagh State Parkway northbound, immediately south of Goose Neck Bridge in Nassau County. The parkway runs north-south through Nassau County, connecting the Southern State Parkway to Jones Beach Island. The Goose Neck Bridge section carries traffic over wetlands in the Town of Hempstead; the guide rail system along that stretch borders water and marshy terrain on both shoulders.
The northbound lanes at that location offer limited shoulder clearance. A rider or vehicle leaving the travel lane at speed has little recovery distance before reaching the guide rail barrier.
