During October 3–9, 2026, the 511NY event feed as recorded by Long Island Traffic logged 6 crash records on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk counties across all 7 days with complete data. Three other 511 incident records — disabled vehicles, debris and similar — were also recorded on those days, according to 511NY records stored by Long Island Traffic.
The 511NY feed switch on October 2, 2026 affects the comparison period: the previous four weeks drew from 25 counted days and averaged 1.4 crash records per day, while this week averaged 0.9 per day, but Long Island Traffic notes that whether the two versions of the feed record incidents at the same rate has not yet been measured.

Fatal crashes on the corridor reached 15 in 2024, per federal data
According to NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, the Southern State Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk recorded 15 fatal crashes and 18 deaths in 2024 (preliminary). FARS covers 2010–2024 and fatal crashes only; it contains no data on this week’s records.
How we measured this
- Records: 511NY accident-class records on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk counties, stored by Long Island Traffic’s 511NY monitor, reported from 12:00 a.m. October 3 through 11:59 p.m. October 9 (Eastern). Queens records are excluded.
- “Crash records” are 511 records titled Crash, Vehicle fire or Overturned vehicle; disabled vehicles, debris and other incidents are counted separately.
- Exit, direction, lane impact and time of day come from each 511 record’s own description and “Reported” time.
- Comparison weeks are the four 7-day periods immediately before this one. Our 511 coverage expanded in June 2026, so no comparison reaches before July 1, 2026.
- Days on which 511NY data was missing or incomplete are left out of this week and of the comparison weeks, and the weeks are compared by average crash records per counted day rather than by weekly totals.
- State Police figures count Troop L daily media-log entries whose road field names this corridor, by the log’s own category. Names in the log are not used.
- The FARS baseline counts fatal crashes and deaths on this corridor’s Nassau and Suffolk portions from NHTSA’s national files.
Limitations
- 511NY data was missing or incomplete on Sep 30, 2026, Oct 1, 2026 and Oct 2, 2026 (a 511NY system change). Those days are left out of every week in this report, so the comparison uses average crash records per day: 7 days counted this week and 25 days in the previous four weeks.
- Long Island Traffic began reading 511NY’s new system on October 2, 2026. Records before and after that date come from different versions of the 511NY feed, and whether the two record incidents at the same rate has not yet been measured, so a change across that date may partly reflect the switch.
- A 511 record is not a verified crash: one collision can produce more than one record, and some crashes never reach 511. These are record counts, not crash totals or crash rates.
- Weekly counts this small move a lot by chance; a single week above or below the 4-week average is not evidence of a trend.
- There is no traffic-volume denominator, so these counts cannot say whether the road is more or less dangerous per mile driven.
- Our database does not store when 511 closed a record, so this report gives no clearance times.
- The Troop L log is the State Police’s daily media release; it does not include crashes handled by county or local police.
- FARS covers 2010–2024 only (2024 preliminary) and fatal crashes only; it says nothing about this week.
