Incident location, Long Island
What Happened
Suffolk County Police are deploying a seized $60,000 Corvette Stingray as the centerpiece of a new public awareness campaign aimed at deterring drunk drivers across Long Island. The mint-condition 2020 Corvette, which was confiscated from its former owner in 2022 under county seizure law following his second DWI arrest, has been transformed into a mobile warning about the costly consequences of driving under the influence, according to police officials.
The classic sports car features a sunroof, V8 engine, and just over 3,000 miles on the odometer, with a Kelley Blue Book value between $60,000 and $65,000. Similar models listed for sale online command prices as high as $90,000, according to The Post. After impounding the vehicle following the previous owner’s second drunken driving arrest, Suffolk County Police gave the Corvette a complete department paint job and makeover, transforming it from a luxury vehicle into a stark reminder of potential consequences.
“It was quite an impactful seizure,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina told The Post. “I’m sure the individual [prior owner] is going to remember this for the rest of his life. Quite frankly, that night we might have saved his life. He’s driving drunk and God know what could have happened to him if we didn’t take the car. We want people to know that if you drive drunk in Suffolk County, this could happen to your car.”
The vehicle now features police equipment including a siren and flashing lights, along with one distinctive marking not found on standard patrol cars: “DWI seizure” prominently displayed on the exterior. Rather than joining the department’s active patrol fleet, the Corvette will be used for display during public events and parades as a visual deterrent to potential drunk drivers, officials said.
Commissioner Catalina emphasized the educational investment value of keeping the high-end vehicle rather than selling it at auction. “Whatever money we could have gotten for this car at auction — this is an investment in the future for us,” he told The Post. “We get to use this car over and over again, and we’re hoping that this is going to deter drunk driving in Suffolk County. I think we got our money back 10 times over. If we save a life, it would be like investing in Amazon in the ’90s.”
The seizure and conversion of the Corvette represents part of Suffolk County Police Department’s intensified crackdown on drunk driving that has contributed to reducing fatal traffic accidents over the past three years. The commissioner revealed that DWI enforcement has become a priority for officer advancement within the department. “We’ve told that patrol cops out in the street, ‘Hey, if you want to advance in the Suffolk County Police Department and you’re coming into my office to see me about making detective or going to an investigative unit, I expect you to have DWI arrests,’” Catalina said.
Location & Road Context
The vehicle seizure occurred within Suffolk County’s jurisdiction, which encompasses the eastern portion of Long Island and includes numerous high-traffic corridors where drunk driving enforcement takes place. Suffolk County covers over 900 square miles and includes major roadways such as the Long Island Expressway, Southern State Parkway, and dozens of local roads where DWI stops frequently occur.
The seized Corvette will make appearances at public events and parades throughout Suffolk County as part of the ongoing awareness campaign, bringing the anti-DWI message directly to communities across the region.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
The vehicle seizure was conducted under Suffolk County’s vehicle forfeiture law, which was originally adopted in 1999 and subsequently modified in 2004 following legal challenges. The law allows the county to permanently confiscate vehicles from repeat DWI offenders, providing law enforcement with additional tools beyond traditional criminal penalties.
The former owner’s second DWI arrest triggered the seizure provisions under the county statute, resulting in the permanent loss of his $60,000+ vehicle. The seizure represents one of the department’s most valuable vehicle confiscations under the program.
Broader Impact
Suffolk County’s stepped-up DWI enforcement efforts in 2023 have coincided with a measurable decrease in traffic fatalities, demonstrating the potential effectiveness of aggressive drunk driving prevention strategies. The department’s emphasis on DWI arrests as a factor in officer advancement reflects a systematic approach to addressing impaired driving that goes beyond traditional periodic enforcement campaigns. By converting seized assets into ongoing educational tools rather than simply auctioning them off, the department creates a lasting visual reminder of the real-world consequences that extend far beyond court fines and license suspensions, potentially reaching thousands of residents at community events throughout the year.
