May 26, 2026. What started as a routine DWI stop on a Hamptons back road turned into a drug bust when police found cocaine on the suspect at the station. Leonel Josue Martinez Biznay, 23, of East Hampton now faces two DWI counts plus a fifth-degree drug possession charge after his Memorial Day weekend arrest.
The Stop
At approximately 9:30 PM on Sunday, May 24, an East Hampton Town Police officer observed a 2015 Ram pickup truck heading northbound on Springs Fireplace Road — a two-lane road that winds through the Springs neighborhood between East Hampton Village and Three Mile Harbor.
The officer watched as Martinez Biznay’s truck repeatedly failed to maintain its lane, crossing the white fog line on the right side of the road multiple times. A records check revealed that the vehicle’s registration had been suspended.
The officer initiated a traffic stop.
What Police Found
When officers made contact with Martinez Biznay, they observed the textbook indicators of alcohol impairment:
- Strong odor of alcohol on his breath
- Bloodshot and glassy eyes
- Slurred speech
- Unsteady on his feet when he exited the vehicle
Martinez Biznay was arrested and transported to East Hampton Town Police Headquarters for processing.
Then came the second discovery: approximately one hour into the booking process, officers found nearly one gram of cocaine inside a plastic bag in Martinez Biznay’s wallet.
What had been a DWI arrest became a drug case.
The Charges
Martinez Biznay was charged with:
| Charge | Class | Potential Penalty |
|---|---|---|
| DWI — Driving While Intoxicated (VTL §1192.3) | Misdemeanor (1st offense) | Up to 1 year jail, $500–$1,000 fine, 6-month license revocation |
| DWI — Per Se (VTL §1192.2, if BAC ≥ 0.08%) | Misdemeanor (1st offense) | Same as above |
| Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 5th Degree (Penal Law §220.06) | Class D Felony | Up to 2.5 years in state prison |
| Suspended Registration (VTL §512) | Traffic infraction | Fine + additional suspension |
The cocaine possession charge is the most serious — a Class D felony that carries potential state prison time. For a first-time offender, judicial diversion (drug treatment court) is a possibility, but the combination of DWI + drug possession + suspended registration paints a picture that prosecutors are unlikely to treat leniently.
Springs Fireplace Road — A Dangerous Stretch
Springs Fireplace Road is one of the most hazardous roads in the East Hampton area. The narrow, winding two-lane road connects East Hampton Village to the Springs community and Three Mile Harbor, passing through residential neighborhoods with limited street lighting, no sidewalks, and sharp curves.
The road sees heavy traffic during summer weekends as visitors head to and from bars and restaurants in East Hampton Village. DWI enforcement on Springs Fireplace Road is routine — East Hampton Town Police regularly patrol the corridor, particularly on holiday weekends.
Memorial Day Weekend DWI Enforcement
This arrest occurred on the first night of the “100 Deadliest Days” — the Memorial Day through Labor Day period when DWI arrests and fatal crashes spike across Long Island. Law enforcement agencies across Nassau and Suffolk counties deploy additional patrols specifically targeting impaired drivers during holiday weekends.
If you’re drinking in the Hamptons:
- Ride share services (Uber, Lyft) operate in East Hampton — use them
- Designate a sober driver before the night begins
- East Hampton has a free Safe Ride program during summer weekends — check with your hotel or venue
- A DWI conviction in New York carries mandatory license revocation, fines, and potential jail time — it will cost you far more than a cab ride home
No mugshot has been released by East Hampton Town Police at this time.
