What Happened
Residents across parts of Uniondale, Garden City, East Meadow, Mineola, and Hempstead faced significant road closures and a sweeping security lockdown Friday afternoon as President Donald Trump visited Nassau County for a public safety forum, according to Newsday. The lockdown was expected to run from 1 to 5 p.m.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman — a Republican currently running for governor — announced the visit Thursday while standing before a line of police officers, Newsday reported. Blakeman said Trump would be touring two facilities on the campus of Nassau Community College: the county’s David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence and the Bolla police training village. The event was described as a forum on public safety. “He’ll be addressing public safety issues, and I will be addressing public safety issues,” Blakeman said. “I think he’s excited to come and see our facilities.”
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the Secret Service had already surveyed the area ahead of the visit. Security resources deployed included aviation units, K-9 units, and SWAT teams. While police declined to detail specific road closures, citing security concerns, they made clear the surrounding area was to be treated as a restricted zone. “You’ve got to understand that the area is a hot zone,” Ryder said. “We have a lot of road closures that are going to come. If you’re going to the event and you are ticketed to go to that event, that means you’ve been prior-approved to be there.” Blakeman confirmed the area would be heavily fortified by both local police and the U.S. Secret Service.
A select number of public tickets were made available for the forum through Nassau County’s website and the Secret Service. Ticketed, pre-approved visitors were directed to enter the campus off Stewart Avenue, where they passed through security screenings. Visitors were urged not to bring bags. Nassau Community College was closed Friday but remained open for visitor parking.
Several groups announced plans to protest Trump’s visit. Authorities designated a protest area at Endo Boulevard and Perimeter Road — approximately half a mile from the David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence — where demonstrators were permitted to gather.
Location & Road Context
The security perimeter was centered on the Nassau Community College campus, which sits at the intersection of several heavily traveled Nassau County corridors spanning Uniondale, Garden City, and East Meadow. The affected zone touched multiple municipalities, including Mineola and Hempstead, making it one of the broader traffic disruption events in the county in recent memory. Nassau County has recorded 1,041 accidents in our local database, underscoring how sensitive its road network is to any large-scale disruption.
Drivers traveling through Nassau County on Friday were advised to seek alternate routes and avoid the area around Stewart Avenue and the college campus entirely during the 1–5 p.m. lockdown window. No specific detour routes were announced by police, again citing security concerns.
Broader Impact
The visit added a significant traffic management challenge to a county road network that had already seen notable incidents in the 24 hours prior, including a crash on the Northern State Parkway and an overturned vehicle on NY 135 the previous day. With aviation, K-9, and SWAT resources redirected toward the presidential visit, Nassau County drivers were encouraged to exercise extra caution throughout the afternoon and plan for delays well beyond the immediate closure zone.
