What Happened
An 18-wheel tanker truck overturned on Rockaway Boulevard in Rosedale, Queens, just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, spilling approximately 2,000 gallons of gasoline into the road surface, storm drains, and a canal near the Nassau County border, according to ABC7 New York. The truck driver struck a utility pole on the turn, which caused the 18-wheeler to flip, ABC7 reported.
The tanker had a 12,400-gallon capacity and was carrying 8,500 gallons at the time of the crash, officials said. Of that load, about 2,000 gallons escaped the tank and spread across the roadway, into storm drains, and into a canal that feeds other channels in the area, per ABC7 New York. The canal connection raised immediate concern about fuel reaching downstream waterways before containment crews could respond.
One witness told ABC7 that the driver had just left a gas station and lost control while turning onto Rockaway Boulevard. Nassau County Police are investigating the cause of the overturn. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday evening’s report.
The truck driver and two other people at the scene were evaluated by medical personnel on site. No serious injuries were reported. FDNY reporter John Del Giorno covered the scene from NewsCopter 7 for ABC7 New York.
Crews stopped the leak and applied foam to cover all spilled gasoline before the afternoon was out, officials confirmed. A second tanker truck was brought to the scene to offload the roughly 6,500 gallons still inside the overturned vehicle. That transfer process was expected to take additional time before the overturned rig could be moved.
Location & Road Context
Rockaway Boulevard runs east-west through Rosedale in the southeastern corner of Queens, directly along the Nassau County line. The stretch near the spill sits close to the Nassau-Queens border corridor, a busy commercial and industrial truck route serving fuel depots and distribution centers in the area. The Nassau County side of the border saw immediate multi-agency response given the proximity of the spill to Nassau waterways and storm infrastructure.
Long Island Traffic has recorded 1,078 accidents in Nassau County in our local incident database. Rockaway Boulevard, as a primary truck corridor near the county line, sees consistent heavy-vehicle traffic, including tanker routes serving stations on both sides of the border.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
Nassau County Police are leading the investigation into how the tanker overturned, according to ABC7 New York. No arrests or charges had been announced as of the August 19 report. The FDNY responded on the Queens side while 100 firefighters from 17 Nassau County volunteer fire departments worked the scene from the Nassau perimeter.
Broader Impact
The 2,000 gallons of gasoline that reached the storm drains and canal before containment foam was applied creates a potential environmental remediation timeline well beyond the road-cleanup window. Fuel entering tidal canal systems in southeastern Queens can migrate into Jamaica Bay. State environmental officials had not issued a public statement as of Wednesday evening’s filing; Nassau County Police said their probe would address the cause of the overturn, not the environmental response, which falls under separate agency jurisdiction.
