What Happened
A 19-year-old man from Astoria, Queens, was killed Sunday afternoon after his northbound motorcycle struck a guardrail on the Wantagh State Parkway at Goose Creek Bridge, roughly one mile north of the Jones Beach water tower. New York State Police confirmed the crash time at approximately 5:05 p.m. on August 23, 2026.
According to News 12 Long Island, troopers said the rider was traveling northbound when the motorcycle hit the guardrail. The impact ejected both the rider and his passenger from the bike. The rider landed on the roadway surface; his passenger came down on the grassy area along the right shoulder.
Emergency responders transported the rider to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His passenger — whose name had not been released as of Sunday night — was in critical condition, News 12 Long Island reported. The specific hospital was not identified in the New York State Police report or in News 12’s coverage filed at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
The crash forced the shutdown of all northbound lanes on the parkway at the crash site. The lanes reopened just before 9 p.m., leaving them closed for approximately three hours and 55 minutes during a Sunday evening travel period.

Goose Creek Bridge sits on the northbound Wantagh State Parkway roughly one mile north of the Jones Beach water tower, in the stretch of the parkway that carries heavy summer traffic between the Southern State Parkway and Jones Beach Island. The guardrail the rider struck runs along the parkway’s northbound lanes at the bridge structure.
Sunday’s fatality is the third incident recorded on the Wantagh Parkway corridor in the past 30 days and the 14th in 2026, according to Long Island Traffic’s incident registry. The most recent prior fatal crash on this corridor was recorded April 30, 2026. Three additional crashes on the same corridor preceded Sunday’s — a moderate crash August 20, a minor crash August 6, and a minor crash July 28.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
New York State Police are investigating the crash. No charges had been filed and no cause beyond the guardrail strike had been released publicly as of the News 12 report timestamped 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The passenger’s identity and condition updates were pending further release from troopers.
