What Happened
A car drove into Vapeology, a vape shop at Buttermarket in Bury St Edmunds, at 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, according to Bury Mercury. Suffolk Constabulary confirmed officers were called to the scene at that time. The shop sustained physical damage.
Suffolk Constabulary is investigating the crash as a deliberate act, the Bury Mercury reported. No arrests have been made. The investigation remains open under crime reference 37/39405/26.
Councillor Dylan Roques, the Abbeygate division member on Suffolk County Council, said the incident was “deeply worrying,” particularly given that it appeared purposeful. Roques acknowledged community concerns about vape shops in Bury St Edmunds but said driving a vehicle into the building was not a legitimate form of protest. He called on everyone involved to cooperate fully with Suffolk Constabulary and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Councillor Julia Wakelam, the West Suffolk Council ward member, described the crash as “a shocking incident” and said it was not what residents expect from Bury St Edmunds. Wakelam said she viewed the crash as a one-off, citing what she called a strong police presence in the town centre, per the Bury Mercury report.
