What Happened
A Grady White and a Metal Shark collided in the Long Island Sound approximately two miles north of Pirates Cove on Saturday evening, August 30, 2026, injuring one of the five people aboard the two vessels, according to News 12 Long Island.
The crash was reported around 7:30 p.m. Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers and Port Jefferson Fire Department’s Marine 6 responded to the scene on the Sound, per the News 12 Long Island report.
The injured man, 83 years old, was the only one of the five people involved to require medical attention, according to Suffolk police. Crew aboard Marine 6 transported him back to shore on the fire department vessel.
Port Jefferson EMS received the man at the Brookhaven Town Boat ramp. He was then taken to a local hospital for treatment, officials said.

Pirates Cove sits along the north shore of Port Jefferson, a village on the Suffolk County coastline roughly 60 miles east of New York City. The collision point, two miles north of Pirates Cove, puts it well out into open Long Island Sound water, outside any marked channel or marina approach. The Brookhaven Town Boat ramp served as the handoff point between the fire department vessel and Port Jefferson EMS.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
Suffolk County Police are investigating the cause of the collision. No charges had been announced and no cause had been established as of the morning of August 31, 2026, according to News 12 Long Island. The investigation remains with the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau.
