What Happened
Wayne Conforti Jr., 37, of Flanders, was struck and killed by a pickup truck while crossing Flanders Road near Oak Avenue in Flanders early Sunday morning, August 31, 2026, according to News 12 Long Island. Southampton Town Police received the 911 report of a motor vehicle accident around 1:30 a.m.
Officers from the department’s Community Response Unit and Patrol Division responded to the scene, along with the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Arriving units found Conforti lying in the roadway with serious injuries, police said.
The investigation determined Conforti was crossing Flanders Road when a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, traveling through the lighted intersection at Oak Avenue, struck him, News 12 Long Island reported. The collision happened at a functioning traffic signal. The driver of the Tacoma was not hurt.
Conforti was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead, police said. No charges against the driver had been announced as of the 5:07 a.m. report filed by News 12’s Tara Rincon.
Location & Road Context
Flanders Road is a main commercial and residential corridor running through the hamlet of Flanders in Southampton Town, connecting the Peconic Bay area to points west toward the Hampton Bays business district. The Oak Avenue intersection sits in a section of the road with mixed residential and light commercial development. The crash occurred at a signalized intersection in Flanders, roughly in the center of the hamlet.
Flanders falls within Southampton Town on the East End of Suffolk County. Peconic Bay Medical Center, where Conforti was pronounced dead, is approximately six miles east in Riverhead.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
Southampton Town Police detectives are handling the investigation. As of the initial report, no arrests or charges had been filed against the Tacoma’s driver. The department’s Detective Division is asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631-702-2230.
