Between Friday, Sept. 25 and Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, a nor’easter brought coastal flooding, damaging winds and heavy rain across Nassau and Suffolk counties. According to the National Weather Service New York/Upton, a Coastal Flood Warning was first issued at 5:27 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, and a High Wind Warning followed at 1:47 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26; the last scheduled warning end was 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.

The storm produced 16 tide gauges at or above minor flood stage, 25,172 customers without power at the recorded peak, 54 NWS Local Storm Reports, and 40 storm-type road records logged by 511NY — according to NOAA National Water Prediction Service tide gauges, the PSEG Long Island outage map, NWS New York/Upton Local Storm Reports, and the 511NY event feed as recorded by Long Island Traffic. Follow the latest conditions on our live storm page.

Tide gauges reached flood stage at 16 locations, one in the major category

The NOAA National Water Prediction Service tide gauges, as recorded by Long Island Traffic, showed 16 Long Island gauges at or above NWS minor flood stage during the storm window. How we measured this

  • Window: from 12 hours before the first NWS warning for Nassau or Suffolk (issued Fri 9/25 5:27 a.m. ET) through 6 hours after the last warning’s scheduled end (Sun 9/27 6:00 p.m. ET). Power and rail recovery are followed to the latest LIT record.
  • Power: LIT stores a PSEG Long Island outage-map summary about every 30 to 60 minutes. The peak is the largest customers-out total among those snapshots; town peaks are the largest count seen for each town in any snapshot, so town peaks can come from different times.
  • Storm reports: NWS Local Storm Reports for Nassau and Suffolk with event times inside the window. When NWS issued a correction (“Corrects previous … report”), only the corrected report is counted; a report repeated in several NWS products is counted once.
  • Rail: LIT polls the MTA LIRR alert feed and groups updates of the same MTA alert. “First seen” is when LIT first recorded an alert text, not necessarily when MTA posted it; a suspension’s length is measured between the first record saying “suspended” and the first later record saying service resumed.
  • Roads: 511NY records whose description begins “Downed tree”, “Flooding” or “Downed utility/power/wire”, in Nassau and Suffolk, reported inside the window. One blocked road can produce more than one 511 record, so these are record counts, not a count of distinct blockages.

Limitations

  • LIT began storing gauge readings for this event at Sat 9/26 9:48 p.m. ET; higher water before then (reported by NWS in its storm reports) is not in the gauge table.
  • Local Storm Reports record what spotters, officials, media and the public reported to NWS. They are not a complete census of damage or flooding.
  • Wind and rain figures are the NWS statements’ own station reports, including volunteer and private weather networks; they are point readings, not area averages.
  • This page reports what the listed agencies published and what LIT’s monitors stored; it does not include damage assessments, insurance figures or municipal closure lists.
