What Happened
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Ponquogue Avenue and Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays on Thursday, October 22, 2026, according to Southampton Town Police. Police said they received the report at approximately 1:58 p.m.
According to police, the pedestrian was crossing Ponquogue Avenue from east to west at the intersection when the vehicle made a left turn from Montauk Highway onto Ponquogue Avenue.
Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance treated the pedestrian at the scene. Police said a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter then flew the pedestrian to Stony Brook Hospital.
Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. “No criminality is suspected at this time. The investigation is continuing,” police said.
Road and Transit Impact
Police said Ponquogue Avenue between Montauk Highway and Good Ground Road was shut down for a period of time while they conducted the investigation. Police did not say when the road reopened.
