The Problem

Getting to JFK from Nassau County should be simple. It’s barely 20 miles from the county line. But anyone who’s sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway at 4 PM on a Thursday knows the truth: that 20 miles can take 90 minutes. The Van Wyck is the default GPS route, and that’s exactly why it’s a disaster. Every rideshare driver, every cab, every airport shuttle — they’re all funneling onto the same overloaded expressway. Miss your flight because you trusted Google Maps at rush hour? Welcome to the club.

The Shortcut

You have three real options, and the right one depends on when you’re driving and where in Nassau you’re starting from.

Option 1: Belt Parkway (South Shore origins) If you’re coming from anywhere along the South Shore — Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Massapequa — take the Southern State Parkway west. Stay on it as it becomes the Belt Parkway past Valley Stream. Follow the Belt west along Jamaica Bay. You’ll pass the exits for JFK’s cargo area, then take the exit for the airport. This route swings south of the Van Wyck mess entirely. The Belt has its own congestion near the Verrazano approach, but the JFK section usually flows.

Option 2: Cross Island Parkway (North Shore origins) Starting from Manhasset, Great Neck, Roslyn, or anywhere along the North Shore? Take the Long Island Expressway west to Exit 29 (Cross Island Parkway South). Take Cross Island south — it connects directly to the Belt Parkway, which feeds into JFK. This avoids the Van Wyck completely. The Cross Island can stack up near the Whitestone Bridge exits, but south of the bridge traffic generally clears.

Option 3: Atlantic Avenue through Jamaica (Central Nassau) This is the local’s secret. From central Nassau — Garden City, Mineola, Hempstead — take Atlantic Avenue (NY-439) straight west. It cuts through Queens Village and into Jamaica. From Jamaica, pick up the Van Wyck southbound for just the last two miles into JFK, or cut through the local streets to the airport’s north entrance via Lefferts Boulevard. You skip 90% of the Van Wyck backup. The lights on Atlantic are timed, and once you’re past the Belmont Park area, traffic moves steadily.

When to Use It

Belt Parkway: Weekday rush hours (3 PM–7 PM), Friday afternoons, holiday travel days. This is your most reliable option when the Van Wyck is at its worst. Also strong on weekend mornings when the expressway is clogged with construction.

Cross Island Parkway: Best during midday (10 AM–2 PM) and evenings (after 7 PM). The Cross Island is relatively empty outside of rush. It’s also the fastest option from North Shore towns, period — regardless of time.

Atlantic Avenue: Best when you’re running late and need predictability. Atlantic doesn’t have the explosive backups that the expressways get. You’ll hit red lights, but you’ll never sit dead-stopped for 20 minutes. Great for early morning flights (4 AM–6 AM) when the lights cycle fast and there’s no traffic.

When NOT to Use It

Belt Parkway: Weekend summer afternoons when everyone’s coming back from the Rockaways and Coney Island. The Belt turns into a parking lot from Flatbush Ave to the Verrazano.

Cross Island Parkway: Weekday mornings 7 AM–9 AM when it’s backed up from the Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridge traffic. The merge near the bridges is brutal.

Atlantic Avenue: Friday evenings heading into holiday weekends. Jamaica becomes gridlocked with shoppers and buses. Also avoid during any Belmont Park event — the road passes right by the racetrack and traffic around Hempstead Turnpike becomes a knot.

Time Savings

RouteBest CaseTypical SavingsWorst Case
Belt Parkway30 min to JFKSaves 20-30 min vs Van Wyck55 min (summer weekends)
Cross Island25 min to JFKSaves 15-25 min vs Van Wyck45 min (morning rush)
Atlantic Ave35 min to JFKSaves 15-20 min vs Van Wyck50 min (Friday evening)

From central Nassau (Garden City area), the Van Wyck route during rush hour regularly takes 60-75 minutes. Any of these alternatives will cut that to 35-50 minutes on a bad day.

Pro Tips

  • Check the Van Wyck cameras before you leave. 511NY has live feeds. If it’s red from Hillside Ave to the terminals, don’t even consider it.
  • The Belt Parkway has a 13’0” clearance limit on some overpasses. If you’re driving a tall van or truck, you cannot take the Belt. Use the Cross Island or Atlantic Ave instead.
  • Cell phone lot timing: JFK’s cell phone lot is off the Van Wyck. If you’re picking someone up and used the Belt, loop through the central terminal area to reach it rather than backtracking to the Van Wyck.
  • Atlantic Ave has speed cameras in school zones through Queens Village. Keep it at 25 in the marked zones or you’ll get a $50 ticket in the mail.
  • Gas up before the border. Queens gas prices are consistently 20-40 cents higher per gallon than Nassau. Fill up in Elmont or Franklin Square before you cross.
  • Terminal-specific entrances matter. If you’re going to Terminal 1 or 2, the north entrance off Lefferts Boulevard is faster than the main Van Wyck entrance. The Atlantic Ave route puts you in perfect position for this.
