Incident location, Long Island
What Happened
A 39-year-old Sayville man was killed Wednesday morning when his motorcycle collided with an SUV at a Bohemia intersection, according to Suffolk County police. Daniel Javurek was riding a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Lakeland Avenue when the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. at the intersection with Peter Lane.
Police said a 41-year-old woman from Bohemia was driving a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder and attempting to make a left turn from west Peter Lane onto south Lakeland Avenue when her vehicle struck the northbound motorcycle. The collision occurred as Javurek was traveling north on Lakeland Avenue through the intersection, according to Suffolk County police.
Following the impact, Javurek was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk for emergency treatment, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The severity of his injuries from the collision proved fatal despite medical intervention at the Long Island facility.
The SUV driver sustained injuries in the crash but they were determined to be non-life-threatening, according to police. She was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment following the Wednesday morning collision. Her condition and current status have not been disclosed by authorities.
Both vehicles involved in the fatal crash were impounded by police for mandatory safety checks, according to Suffolk County police. The impoundment of both the 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle and 2024 Nissan Pathfinder is standard procedure in fatal motor vehicle accidents to allow investigators to examine the vehicles for mechanical issues or other factors that may have contributed to the collision.
Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives have taken over the investigation into the fatal crash and are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
Location & Road Context
The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Lakeland Avenue and Peter Lane in Bohemia, a busy area that sees significant commuter traffic during morning rush hour. Lakeland Avenue serves as a major north-south thoroughfare in this section of Suffolk County, connecting residential neighborhoods with commercial areas and providing access to major east-west routes.
The intersection where the crash occurred involves traffic making turning movements from Peter Lane onto the more heavily traveled Lakeland Avenue. Morning commuter traffic in this area typically peaks between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., which coincides with the time of Wednesday’s fatal collision. The specific dynamics of left-turning vehicles crossing the path of northbound traffic on Lakeland Avenue created the conditions for this tragic incident.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
The investigation into the fatal motorcycle crash remains active under the Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad, with detectives working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the collision. No charges have been announced at this time, and police have not indicated whether any citations or criminal charges are anticipated in connection with the crash.
The vehicle impoundment and safety inspections are part of the standard investigative protocol for fatal motor vehicle accidents, allowing authorities to rule out mechanical failure or vehicle defects as contributing factors. The investigation will likely examine factors including visibility conditions at the time of the crash, traffic signal timing if applicable, and the actions of both drivers in the moments leading up to the collision.
Broader Impact
The fatal crash highlights the particular vulnerability of motorcyclists in intersection collisions, especially those involving left-turning vehicles. Left-turn crashes are among the most common and deadly types of motorcycle accidents, often occurring when drivers of larger vehicles fail to see approaching motorcycles or misjudge their speed and distance. The 7:50 a.m. timing of this crash places it during peak morning commute hours when traffic volumes are high and drivers may be dealing with sun glare and other visibility challenges that can contribute to intersection accidents.
