The crash occurred on one of the most heavily trafficked corridors on Long Island during a period of the night — just after 11:30 p.m. — when reduced visibility and fatigue can be significant contributing factors in rear-end collisions involving large commercial vehicles. No weather or road surface conditions at the time of the crash were specified in the initial police report.

Broader Impact
Rear-end collisions involving tractor-trailers and smaller passenger vehicles are among the most dangerous crash configurations on American highways, largely due to the extreme disparity in mass and ride height between commercial trucks and standard passenger cars. On a high-volume interstate like the LIE, these crashes can also trigger secondary incidents from debris, sudden lane blockages, and rubbernecking.
