Pitts told Newsday he was hauling bananas when a box truck abruptly cut in front of him at the exit, forcing a split-second decision. “The box truck, right here off this exit, just jumped in front of me. And I had no choice — either get into a crazy accident, or do a soft landing over here,” he said, pointing toward the grass alongside the road. Rather than allow a chain-reaction collision, Pitts chose to guide his rig onto its side in the grass. “Instead of making it worse than what it is, let me just fall right here on my side. So, that’s what happened,” he explained.
