Soul Asylum released a reimagined acoustic version of “Freak Accident” on July 28, 2026, the latest advance single from the Minneapolis band’s forthcoming live album MPLS Unplugged, due out August 28. “Freak Accident” originally appeared on the band’s acclaimed 2020 studio album Slowly But Shirley. The new version strips the song to its acoustic core, with STRINGenius string quartet arrangements that, per the band, gently expand the song without losing what made the original so affecting. The reinterpretation puts frontman Dave Pirner’s songwriting front and center — an intentional focus that defines the aesthetic of the entire MPLS Unplugged project.
The album itself was recorded live at Minneapolis’ historic State Theatre on April 20, 2023, a date chosen to fall nearly 30 years to the day after Soul Asylum’s landmark 1993 MTV Unplugged performance. Rather than a note-for-note recreation of that earlier set, MPLS Unplugged presents new interpretations spanning every era of the band’s career, approaching familiar songs with what the band describes as warmth, vulnerability, and renewed perspective.
The lineup for the recording brought together Soul Asylum’s working band — Pirner on vocals, longtime guitarist Ryan Smith, bassist Jeremy Tapparo, and drummer Michael Bland — alongside Ivan Neville on keyboards. Neville’s participation carries particular historical weight: his history with the band dates back to the original 1993 MTV Unplugged session. The full album spans four vinyl sides and 20 tracks: Side A opens with “The Storm Is Passing Over” and moves through “Somebody To Shove,” “Crazy Mixed Up World,” “String of Pearls,” and “Without A Trace.” Side B features “Freak Accident,” “Lately,” “Misery,” “Never Really Been,” and “Runaway Train.” Side C includes “What Will Become of Me,” “Stand Up and Be Strong,” “Homesick,” “Black Gold,” and “If I Told You.” The album closes on Side D with “The Sun Maid,” “New World,” “Farmer John,” “Eyes Of A Child,” and “Made To Be Broken.”

While Soul Asylum is a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based band, Long Island–area music fans have reason to pay attention to the group’s current touring activity. The band’s 2026 North American tour — tied to MPLS Unplugged — includes a September 26 date at 24th Street Park in Virginia Beach, VA, within regional driving distance for many Long Islanders, with the band noting that additional dates are to be announced. Earlier in the tour cycle, Soul Asylum played Worcester, MA on July 28 and Hampton, NH on July 29, venues that draw audiences from across the Northeast.
