The malfunction occurred at the Jones Bay Bridge, where extreme heat caused the drawbridge mechanism to fail, preventing normal operation and forcing a full closure of the Meadowbrook northbound at that location. News 12 Long Island reported that New York State Police initially enacted the closure while New York State Department of Transportation mechanics were dispatched to diagnose and repair the problem.
