What Happened
Edison Aguilar, 20, of Patchogue, was killed August 30, 2026, when his motorcycle struck a car making a left turn at the intersection of Route 112 and Southaven Avenue in Medford, according to The South Shore Press, which first reported the fatality citing Suffolk County Police.
Aguilar was riding a 2008 Honda motorcycle northbound on Route 112 when the collision occurred at Southaven Avenue. A 2016 Toyota Matrix, driven by Maria Lobato, 44, of Medford, was traveling southbound on Route 112 and had begun a left turn onto Southaven Avenue when Aguilar’s motorcycle struck the vehicle, South Shore Press reported, citing Suffolk County Police.
Aguilar sustained serious injuries in the collision. He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Suffolk County Police said.
Lobato and a passenger in the Toyota were not injured, police said. Both the 2008 Honda motorcycle and the 2016 Toyota Matrix were impounded for safety inspections following the crash.
Location & Road Context
Route 112 runs north-south through central Suffolk County, connecting Patchogue to the south with Port Jefferson to the north. The Southaven Avenue intersection in Medford sits along a commercial and residential stretch of the corridor where left-turn conflicts with through traffic are a documented concern for Suffolk County roads.
The Medford area has seen multiple serious incidents along this corridor in recent weeks. A Medford man was charged with DWI on August 28 after crashing into a Sunrise Highway construction zone, and a separate motorcyclist was killed on August 29 in another crash elsewhere on Long Island.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances of the fatal crash. No charges have been announced against Lobato as of the initial police report filed August 31, 2026, by The South Shore Press.
