What Happened
A 44-year-old Middle Island man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his 2020 Lexus crossed into oncoming traffic on Rocky Point Yaphank Road in Rocky Point, according to a Suffolk County Police Department press release.
He was driving northbound when the Lexus veered into the southbound lane and struck the front driver side of a 2020 Jeep at approximately 1:30 p.m. The collision was head-on by contact point. A second person — the Jeep’s driver — was also injured in the crash.
The Lexus driver was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Jeep’s driver, a 45-year-old Port Jefferson man, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with minor injuries, the Suffolk County Police Department said. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check.
Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are handling the investigation. The department has not stated a cause for the lane departure, and no charges have been filed as of the press release.
Suffolk County Police closed Rocky Point-Yaphank Road between Industrial Way and Whiskey Road during the investigation that afternoon, a police spokesperson told Patch.

Rocky Point Yaphank Road runs through the Rocky Point hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, connecting the North Shore community to Middle Country Road and points south toward Yaphank. The road carries two-way traffic with no physical median barrier separating northbound and southbound lanes along much of its length, leaving little margin when a vehicle drifts across the center line.
