What Happened
A vehicle crashed into the toll booth area at the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park on Monday, September 14, 2026, at approximately 11:14 a.m., killing the sole occupant. The crash happened at the northern end of the Sunken Meadow State Parkway in the town of Smithtown, Suffolk County, according to a release from the New York State Police.
Troopers from SP Brentwood responded after the single-vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation determined the vehicle struck the toll booth area and became engulfed in flames. One deceased occupant was located inside the vehicle.
Fire and crash damage was severe enough that investigators could not immediately identify the victim or determine the make and model of the car, per the State Police release. Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation were called to the scene to assist. The New York State Park Police, Smithtown Fire Department, and Suffolk County Police Department also responded.
The cause of the crash had not been released as of the State Police statement. No additional occupants were reported. State Police indicated further information would be released as it becomes available, with Technical Lieutenant Jack L. The Sunken Meadow State Parkway runs north from the Jericho Turnpike corridor through Kings Park and terminates at the Sunken Meadow State Park entrance in Smithtown. The toll booth area where the crash occurred sits at the parkway’s northernmost point, where the road meets the park entrance plaza on the Long Island Sound shoreline.
Smithtown has seen several crashes in the weeks before this incident. A three-car crash left one person seriously injured on September 7, 2026, and a crash on NY 347 was reported September 10. Overnight lane closures on State Route 25 through Smithtown and the Village of the Branch were also in effect earlier that week.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, which indicates the death is being investigated as an unclassified fatality pending identification of the victim and determination of cause. No charges have been filed. The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed, and the make and model of the vehicle remains unknown as of the State Police release dated September 14, 2026.
