How we measured this

  • Records: 511NY accident-class records titled Crash, Vehicle fire or Overturned vehicle on all Nassau and Suffolk roads, stored by Long Island Traffic’s 511NY monitor, reported from 12:00 a.m. July 4 through 11:59 p.m. October 1, 2026 (Eastern). Queens records are excluded.
  • Exit: the first exit named in each 511 record’s description (“at Exit 39 - Glen Cove Road (North Hempstead)”). Records that name no exit are counted in the total but not in the leaderboard. Exit numbers repeat across roads, so each location is a road plus an exit.
  • Direction is the 511 record’s direction field; time of day and weekday come from its “Reported” time.
  • The window is the last 90 complete days; our 511 coverage expanded in June 2026, so no window reaches before July 1, 2026.

Limitations

  • A 511 record is not a verified crash: one collision can produce more than one record (see the possible-repeat column), and some crashes never reach 511. These are record counts, not crash totals.
  • There is no traffic-volume denominator here: an exit with more traffic can collect more records without being more dangerous per vehicle.
  • 511 places a record at the nearest named exit, which may be up to a mile or more from where the crash happened.
  • Counts at single exits are small; the order among exits with similar counts can change from one quarter to the next.
