What Happened
Suffolk County police confirmed that a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Lindenhurst early Tuesday morning. The crash was reported at approximately 4:27 a.m. near Sunrise Highway and North Indiana Avenue, according to Patch. Police confirmed the pedestrian’s death Tuesday afternoon but did not immediately release the person’s identity or additional details about the circumstances of the crash.
ABC7 New York (WABC) reported that the pedestrian was struck on the westbound side of Sunrise Highway near North Indiana Avenue, and that the driver fled the scene. ABC7 also reported that Suffolk County crime scene investigators responded to the scene, where detectives were “collecting evidence, surveying the area, taking photographs and placing evidence into bags as part of the investigation.” No arrests had been reported as of the time of ABC7’s publication.
Road and Transit Impact
Sunrise Highway was temporarily closed between Wellwood Avenue and North Jefferson Avenue following the crash, ABC7 New York reported. The roadway has since reopened in both directions, Suffolk County police confirmed, as reported by Patch.
On This Corridor / Local Crash Record
Long Island Traffic’s 511NY records show 20 crash records on Sunrise Highway in the trailing 90 days (July 8 through October 6, 2026); those are record counts from 511NY’s accident-class records, and one collision can produce more than one record. Federal FARS fatal-crash records (2010–2024) place five fatal crashes on or at Sunrise Highway within Lindenhurst’s 2020 Census boundaries, occurring in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2022. New York State DMV crash data for 2021–2024 show the Village of Lindenhurst recorded 17 crashes coded as a collision with a pedestrian over that four-year period; those figures reflect reported crashes as coded by the reporting agency and say nothing about the cause of Tuesday’s crash.
