What Happened
Cassandra Panetta, 41, of Plainview, pleaded guilty on September 18, 2026 before Acting Supreme Court Justice Helene Gugerty to Manslaughter in the Second Degree (a Class C felony), Assault in the Second Degree (a Class D felony), and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs (a misdemeanor), according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office as reported by Patch and Long Island Life & Politics.
The crash occurred on August 10, 2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m. at the intersection of Carman Avenue and Salisbury Park Drive in East Meadow. According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office as reported by Patch, Panetta was driving her 2021 Nissan Maxima along Carman Avenue headed toward Plainview when she drove through a red light without braking and struck a vehicle that was attempting to make a left turn through a green light onto Carman Avenue from Salisbury Park Drive. The struck vehicle was carrying three passengers, the DA’s office said.
Patch reported the point of impact as the driver’s side of the struck vehicle; Long Island Life & Politics reported it more specifically as the rear driver’s side. The Nassau County District Attorney’s office, as quoted by Patch, does not further specify the point of impact in the passages available.
A 55-year-old Farmingdale man (the deceased victim) who was a passenger in the struck vehicle went into cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived. He was transported to Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead at 3:13 p.m., according to Hoodline, citing Daily Voice. The driver of the struck vehicle suffered a concussion and the front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Hoodline reported. Panetta suffered a fractured wrist. A hospital blood test revealed the presence of both methamphetamine and amphetamine, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office as reported by Patch.
Nassau County Police Department Homicide Squad detectives arrested Panetta on October 17, 2025, approximately two months after the crash, the DA’s office said per Patch. She had been indicted on six counts and initially pleaded not guilty; the guilty plea resolved three charges, with vehicular manslaughter dropped as part of the disposition, according to Hoodline.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, as reported by Hoodline, said Panetta was high on methamphetamine when she drove through the red light. The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney James Taglienti of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau, according to Patch.
