What Happened
Four years after a 13-year-old boy was fatally struck in a hit-and-run on Granny Road in Coram, his case remains unsolved, Suffolk County Police told Patch. The crash occurred on Oct. 12, 2022.
The boy died from his injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital on Oct. 15, 2022, Daily Voice reported. Patch reported that his mother said he pushed his sister out of the way of the oncoming car and that she suffered only minor injuries. A witness account, reported by a separate Patch article, described the car striking the sister first: “The car hit her first and I guess he went to jump and grab her, and it just took him.” ABC7 New York (WABC) reported the sister was treated at a hospital for a sprained arm. TBR News Media reported she suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the vehicle that fled is a dark-colored 2005 to 2009 Chevrolet Equinox with a damaged front passenger headlight, a damaged passenger bumper, and a broken side-view front passenger mirror, Suffolk County Police said as reported by Patch. ABC7 reported that then-Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison stated: “We were able to identify the vehicle. And it’s important that we share if you see a Chevrolet Equinox 2005-2009, give us a call.” An earlier Patch report noted that the initial SCPD vehicle description characterized the Equinox as “light gray”; the description was later updated to “dark-colored.”
In the weeks after the crash, former Police Commissioner Harrison announced a checkpoint to seek information from the public, Patch reported. No arrest has been made.
