What Happened
Suffolk County Police on Wednesday arrested a Wheatley Heights man who allegedly fled on foot after a car crashed into a Huntington Station adult home Sunday night, Newsday reported. A Suffolk police spokesperson told Newsday that Javon Robinson, 32, was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash.
Police told Newsday the crash happened at about 10 p.m. Sunday. A Honda Civic traveling north on McKay Road left the roadway and struck the Manor Haven Home for Adults at 222 Columbia St. The building sits at the bottom of a curve at the corner of Columbia Street and McKay Road. Police said the driver fled on foot before officers arrived. They now suspect that driver was Robinson.
According to Newsday, the crash caused structural damage to the building. Police said 27 residents, ranging in age from 60 to 80, were displaced, and the Red Cross helped relocate them. No injuries were reported. The home has a capacity of 32 beds, according to the New York State Department of Health.
ABC7 New York reported that the impact “struck a 4-inch fire-protection water pipe, according to a facility employee. The broken pipe triggered significant flooding inside the building.” NBC New York also reported that the car struck a water pipe and that the driver ran off on foot. ABC7 reported that “The Town of Huntington building inspector responded to assess the damage.”
Manor Haven administrators told Newsday that residents were evacuated shortly after 10 p.m. They were taken to the Woodbury Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Woodbury, where they were given beds, medication and breakfast on Monday.
Arrest and Court Date
Robinson was issued a desk appearance ticket, according to Newsday. He is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on Nov. 17.
Officials told Newsday they had no estimate.
