Why the LIE Backs Up in Suffolk County

Westbound 6–10 a.m. is brutal from the county line east; eastbound 3–8 p.m. and summer Friday afternoons (beach and East End traffic) are the other peaks. East of Exit 64 the road narrows and incidents clear more slowly.

Recurring bottlenecks

  • The NY 110 interchange (Exit 49) in Melville — compressed merge geometry and the heaviest AM stacking on the whole expressway.
  • The Sagtikos State Parkway interchange (Exit 53), a high-speed parkway connector toward Jones Beach.
  • The Hauppauge Industrial Park exits (55–57), where commercial-truck volume drives braking-and-debris incidents.
  • Exit 64 (NY 112, Medford), where the HOV lane ends and the LIE drops from eight lanes to six.

Alternate routes when the LIE is blocked

  • Northern State Parkway (to its eastern end near Hauppauge)
  • Sunrise Highway (NY 27) for South Shore and East End trips
  • Jericho Turnpike (NY 25) / Middle Country Road
  • Veterans Memorial Highway (NY 454)

Always confirm live conditions on 511NY before diverting — secondary delays can cascade onto the alternates quickly.
