What Happened
A 25-year-old Shirley man died early Friday morning after running a red light on his motorcycle and slamming into a Nissan at a Centereach intersection, according to police. The fatal collision took place at midnight on July 3, 2026, at the intersection of Middle Country Road and East Boulevard — just hours before the Fourth of July holiday.
According to News 12 Long Island, police identified the motorcyclist as Kevin Zambrano, 25, of Shirley. Officers say Zambrano was traveling on his motorcycle when he disregarded a red light at the Middle Country Road and East Boulevard intersection and collided with a Nissan that was lawfully in or crossing through the intersection. The impact was severe enough to require Zambrano to be transported to a hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
The 19-year-old driver of the Nissan was not injured in the crash, News 12 Long Island reported. Police have not publicly identified the Nissan’s driver by name. The stark contrast in outcomes between the two drivers — one fatally injured, one entirely unhurt — is consistent with the well-documented vulnerability of motorcyclists in multi-vehicle collisions, where riders lack the structural protections afforded to occupants of enclosed vehicles.
The crash unfolded in the overnight hours, a period that introduces additional hazards including reduced visibility, driver fatigue, and lower volumes of ambient traffic — conditions that can contribute to both the likelihood of signal violations and the severity of resulting impacts. There is no indication from News 12 Long Island’s report that weather, road conditions, or impairment played a role, and no charges had been filed against any party as of the time of publication. Police have not released information about the speed of either vehicle at the time of impact.
The timing of the crash — on the cusp of a major holiday weekend — also coincided with an Extreme Heat Warning that was in effect across Long Island, with the National Weather Service warning of highs into the triple digits and poor air quality through Saturday evening. While heat was not cited as a contributing factor in this collision, the holiday weekend traditionally brings elevated traffic volumes across Suffolk County roads overnight, as residents travel to and from Independence Day gatherings.
Location & Road Context
Middle Country Road is one of Suffolk County’s busiest surface arterials, running east–west through several communities in central Long Island, including Centereach. The stretch near East Boulevard is a developed commercial and residential corridor, characterized by signalized intersections, multiple turning movements, and high vehicle throughput during peak hours. Even in overnight conditions, intersections along Middle Country Road carry meaningful traffic volumes given the road’s role as a primary east-west connector for residents of Centereach, Lake Grove, Selden, and surrounding communities.

Investigation & Legal Proceedings
As of the time of this report, no charges have been publicly announced in connection with the crash. Because Kevin Zambrano — the operator who ran the red light — died in the collision, the investigation will likely focus on reconstructing the sequence of events and confirming the cause of the crash rather than pursuing criminal prosecution. The 19-year-old Nissan driver, who was not hurt and was not cited as having committed any traffic violation, has not been identified as a subject of any investigation.
Suffolk County Police are the investigating agency. It is standard practice in fatal traffic crashes on Long Island for investigators to conduct a full accident reconstruction, which may include analysis of traffic signal timing data, physical evidence from the scene, and any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras along Middle Country Road.
Broader Impact
Fatal motorcycle crashes at signalized intersections underscore a persistent pattern on Long Island’s surface roads: red-light violations by motorcyclists — or by drivers of vehicles that strike motorcyclists — consistently produce disproportionately lethal outcomes for riders. New York State data has repeatedly shown that motorcyclists are far more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than occupants of passenger vehicles, and intersection collisions account for a substantial share of those fatalities. This crash adds to a sobering recent history in the Centereach area, which has seen multiple serious traffic incidents in 2026, including a Centereach man indicted for an alleged drunken driving crash that left a road worker with a traumatic brain injury in April and a DWI driver who plowed through a Long Island Expressway road closure, also leaving a DOT worker with a brain injury.
