What Happened
A 21-year-old Hauppauge man — who admitted to driving drunk and killing an off-duty Nassau County Police Officer — is scheduled to be sentenced today, Monday, July 20, 2026, according to News 12 Long Island. The defendant reached a plea agreement last month that is expected to send him to state prison for 7 1/3 to 22 years.
The fatal crash took place just after 6 a.m. on January 31, 2026, at the intersection of Alexander Avenue and Route 347 in St. James. Prosecutors say the defendant was driving 70 mph in a 30-mph zone when he blew through a red light and slammed into the officer’s vehicle. He was 20 years old at the time and had a blood-alcohol content of .20 — more than twice the legal limit of .08. The officer, 42, was en route from her home to the Nassau County Police Department’s Fifth Precinct, where she had served since 2017.
According to News 12 Long Island, the defendant had been drinking for hours before the crash. At his June 2026 guilty plea hearing, he told the court that the night began with the purchase of a bottle of Bacardi at Aqua Vitae Wines and Liquors in Hauppauge. He then drank at a friend’s home in Miller Place in the presence of an adult, before buying and consuming additional drinks at Buffalo Wild Wings in Miller Place, Felt in Hauppauge, and James Joyce and Lindo Mexico in Patchogue. The defendant told the judge that he was never asked for ID or proof of age at any of those locations, despite being under 21.
After leaving downtown Patchogue with a passenger, the defendant drove to Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel in Islandia, where the two were turned away. They then continued toward the passenger’s home — the route that brought them through the St. James intersection where the fatal collision occurred. Social media video released by prosecutors from earlier that same night showed the defendant driving at speeds exceeding 125 mph while weaving in and out of traffic, well before the deadly crash.
The defendant pleaded guilty to a sweeping list of charges: aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter, aggravated vehicular assault, assault, aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and multiple traffic violations. Had he gone to trial and been convicted on all counts, he would have faced 8 1/3 to 25 years in state prison — a range reduced by the plea deal to 7 1/3 to 22 years. The defendant’s attorney stated last month that the agreement spares the officer’s family from reliving the crash in a courtroom.
The officer, 42, left behind a young family. The Nassau County PBA is expected to speak following today’s sentencing to honor her memory and renew calls to end impaired driving.
