What Happened
Vincent McKie, 45, of Bay Shore suffered serious injuries Wednesday night after the Suzuki DRZ dirt bike he was riding rear-ended an SUV stopped in traffic on Brentwood Road, according to Suffolk County Police. The crash was reported at about 9:15 p.m. on August 19, 2026.
McKie was riding southbound on Brentwood Road when his dirt bike struck the right rear of a 2025 Acura RDX in front of 1383 Brentwood Road, Patch reports. The force of the impact ejected McKie from the bike. He was taken by ambulance to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.
The driver of the Acura, Gerson Rivas Varela, 26, of Bay Shore, was not injured, police said. Both vehicles — the Suzuki DRZ and the 2025 Acura RDX — were impounded by Suffolk County Police for safety checks following the collision.
Location & Road Context
Brentwood Road runs north-south through Bay Shore, connecting residential neighborhoods to commercial corridors in the town’s interior. The crash site, in front of 1383 Brentwood Road, sits in a stretch where traffic stops are common during evening hours. For more on crash history in this area, see our Bay Shore accidents page.
Dirt bikes operating on public roads fall under the same New York Vehicle and Traffic Law framework as registered motorcycles, though many Suzuki DRZ models are sold as off-road-only machines and are not street-legal without modification. Suffolk County Police did not indicate in their statement whether McKie’s bike was registered or insured for road use.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives are investigating the crash, according to Patch. No charges or summonses had been announced as of Thursday morning, August 20, 2026. Anyone with information is asked to call Third Squad detectives at 631-854-8352.
Broader Impact
Bay Shore has seen a run of serious roadway injuries in recent weeks. A man running across Bay Shore Road was seriously hurt in a BMW crash on August 2, less than three weeks before Wednesday night’s ejection on Brentwood Road. The Third Squad investigation into McKie’s crash remains open pending the safety checks on both impounded vehicles.
