What Happened
Suffolk County Police said Jairon Velasquez, 20, of Levittown, was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz at a high rate of speed when the car struck a curb and crashed into a utility pole in West Babylon at 3:49 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, Daily Voice reported. Police said he was traveling eastbound from 17th Street across Straight Path.
His passenger, an 18-year-old woman from Deer Park, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip. Police said her injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
Police arrested Velasquez and charged him with driving while intoxicated. Police said the Mercedes-Benz was impounded for a safety check.
How the Reports Compare
Daily Voice and Patch presented the speed and the curb strike as statements from police. Patch also called it a single-vehicle crash and gave the time as “around 3:49 a.m.” Long Island Life & Politics used more cautious wording. It said Velasquez was arrested for “allegedly” driving while intoxicated and was traveling “allegedly at a high rate of speed.” It also said the car “reportedly struck a curb.”
Charges and Next Steps
Police said Velasquez was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 24. Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152.
What we don’t know yet: No source has reported the outcome of the scheduled Oct. 24 arraignment.
