What Happened
A Bay Shore man was seriously injured early Saturday morning after his motorcycle rear-ended a friend’s bike on East Main Street in Patchogue, according to Long Island Life & Politics, which first reported the crash.
At 12:06 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Justin Horning, 26, of Bay Shore, was operating a 2005 Suzuki sport bike westbound on East Main Street, in the stretch between Rider Avenue and North Ocean Avenue. He was traveling behind his friend, Justina Ruland, 25, also of Bay Shore, who was riding a 2012 Honda sport bike in the same direction. The front of Horning’s Suzuki made contact with the rear of Ruland’s Honda, and the collision caused Horning to be thrown from his motorcycle onto the roadway.
Horning was transported by emergency responders to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk, located in Patchogue, where he was admitted for treatment of serious injuries, according to reporting by Long Island Life & Politics. The nature and full extent of those injuries have not been publicly disclosed by investigators at this time.
Ruland, by contrast, was not thrown from the Honda and sustained no injuries in the collision. Both the 2005 Suzuki and the 2012 Honda were impounded following the crash in order to undergo mandatory safety checks, a standard procedure in serious injury crashes investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department.
Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are leading the investigation into the circumstances of the crash. While no charges or citations have been reported as of this writing, detectives are actively seeking any witnesses or individuals with information about what occurred in the moments before and during the collision. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact the Fifth Squad directly at 631-854-8552.
The crash took place in the early hours of the morning, just after midnight, a time period when reduced visibility and the potential for driver fatigue can significantly elevate risk on roadways. The specific cause of the rear-end contact between the two motorcycles has not yet been publicly determined by investigators, and no official cause has been released as part of the preliminary investigation.
Location & Road Context
East Main Street is one of the primary commercial and arterial corridors running through the heart of Patchogue, a densely trafficked village in the Town of Brookhaven in southern Suffolk County. The segment of roadway between Rider Avenue and North Ocean Avenue where this crash occurred sits near the center of Patchogue’s downtown district, an area that sees significant vehicle and pedestrian activity — particularly on weekend evenings and overnight hours when local businesses, restaurants, and bars are operating.
For motorists and riders navigating this section of Suffolk County roads, the East Main Street corridor can present challenges including turning vehicles, parked cars along the curb, and the stop-and-go dynamics of urban traffic. At 12:06 a.m. on a Saturday, conditions along this stretch would typically include reduced ambient lighting compared to daylight hours, making gap-closing distances between vehicles more difficult to judge — a factor that may be relevant as investigators reconstruct this crash. No road statistics specific to this corridor were available at the time of publication.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
As of Saturday morning, Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are actively investigating the crash, as reported by Long Island Life & Politics. Both motorcycles have been impounded to allow for safety checks, which may yield additional forensic or mechanical information relevant to the investigation. No charges have been announced against either Horning or Ruland, and no arrests have been reported in connection with this incident.
Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information about the crash on East Main Street between Rider Avenue and North Ocean Avenue to come forward by contacting the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552. Tips from witnesses, nearby surveillance footage, or dashcam video from vehicles in the area at the time could prove critical in establishing the precise sequence of events that led to the rear-end contact between the two motorcycles.
Broader Impact
Saturday’s serious-injury crash on East Main Street comes on a notable morning for Patchogue road safety, as it occurred the same day that eight people were arrested at a sobriety checkpoint also in Patchogue, and a separate motorcyclist was killed in another motor vehicle crash on Long Island — a grim cluster of incidents underscoring the particular dangers faced by motorcyclists on Long Island roads overnight and on weekends. Riders are statistically among the most vulnerable road users in any collision, and rear-end contacts at highway or arterial speeds carry an elevated risk of catastrophic injury for the rider of the trailing vehicle.
